Liujiaping Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Qb (41-b)

Province:
Shaanxi

Type Locality and Naming

Southwest corner of Shaanxi. The Liujiaping Fm was named by the Qinling Party of Regional Geological Survey of Shaanxi Bureau of Geology in 1967. The typical section is situated around Liujiaping-Shenjiayuan of Ningqiang County, Shaanxi Province.

Synonym: (刘家坪组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Liujiaping Fm is a suite of metamorphic intermediate-acidic volcanic eruptive rocks. It can be subdivided into four lithological members. First member is exposed near Liujiaping and its lower part is purple gray and greenish gray basic scoria breccia, volcanic breccia. Its middle part consists of light gray and gray tuff, tuff-lava intercalated with volcanic breccia and its upper part is light gray and greenish gray brecciated lava, tuffaceous lava intercalated with intermediate acidic tuff. The first member has a thickness of 1000 m. Second member is exposed in Shenjiayuan area and its lower part is gray and light green-gray welded breccia intercalated with lenses of welded agglomerate. Its upper part is dominated by gray to light green welded breccia intercalated with tuff, tuffite and carbonaceous tuffaceous phyllite and its top is welded tuff. The second member has a thickness of about 590 m. Third member is exposed in Zhaojiagou area and its lower part is dominated by gray to greenish gray welded breccia. Its middle part is greenish yellow welded tuff intercalated with tuff and its upper part is greenish yellow tuff intercalated with mud-ball tuff. The third member has a thickness of about 1500 m. Fourth member is exposed south of the line of Liujiaping to Shenjiayuan and dominated by gray, grayish green dacite rhyolite. Its top is intercalated with welded tuff, with thickness more than 400 m. It has a thickness from 400 to 1000 m.
